Tree of Life Research Unit is a research group of basic biology. Research in the unit focuses on studying function and molecular mechanisms of the cells from diverse extant organisms on the earth. Ultimate goal of the study is to better understand principles of life in the context of structure, function, and evolution of the cells.

Clinical Research Unit for Tumor Specific Heme Metabolisms

Neoplastic tissue in brain, bladder and gastrointestinal tract is a target for "Photo dynamic therapy". Although tumor specific porphyrins accumulation is a key phenomenon in this treatment, mechanisms have remained unknown. In 2009, our team found that a membrane transporter SLC46A1 (Heme Carrier Protein 1) was most likely to play an important role for the phenomenon, and we registered it as intelligent properties of Univ. of Tsukuba.
The aim of this research unit is to establish a new diagnostic tool or a treatment for neoplasms utilizing this discovery.

New Therapy for Liver Diseases by Platelets

We have previously reported that platelets have various effects, such as liver regeneration, sinusoid endothelial cells activation, inhibition of hepatic stellate cells activation, hepatic fibrogenesis decreases, and so on. From these results, we aim to develop new therapeutic strategy for refractory hepatic disease.

Mountainous Area ATBI Project

The unit aims at the comprehensive understanding of biota or the ATBI (All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory) in the mountainous area which has functioned as "refugia" of lives, and of all ecological interactions between all taxa. The final goal of our unit is to establish the foundation of a research field of which biodiversities are the most elucidated in the world.
